Mustafizur Gets a Team in the Big Bash and the Star Crisis of Bangladesh's New T20 League
According to a report in Dhaka Post, Bangladesh star left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman has found a team in Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) and has requested a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The report also reveals that another star, leg-spinner Rishad Hossain, will play the full BBL season, while the BCB has organised an auction for its new franchise tournament, the D Three Trophy. This is where the real story lies. Analysis of the report shows that both Mustafizur and Rishad will be unavailable for the T20 version of the BCB's new tournament because of a calendar collision with the BBL season. As a result, their auction prices have fallen below one crore points, with Rishad fetching only sixty lakh points. To the public, this may look like an undervaluation of stars or a sign of declining form, but the real reason is different. The auction prices were set not on overall sporting merit but on the player's availability for the tournament. Both Mustafizur and Rishad are T20 specialists. Mustafizur's left-arm angle, death-over cutters and yorkers make him highly effective on Australia's bouncy pitches. Rishad, an attacking leg-spinner, can take wickets in the middle overs, but his economy rate is relatively high, making him a high-risk, high-reward representative. That is why his auction value is low, not above one crore points like other stars. Similarly, Mustafizur's age is approaching twenty-nine to thirty, a signal of injury risk for a pace bowler. Playing a full BBL season could increase the load on his shoulder, which is a consideration for the BCB ahead of national duty. On the other hand, the report makes clear that although Rishad is unavailable for the T20 version, Fortune franchise bought him for sixty lakh points. This means the D Three Trophy is likely a multi-version tournament where Rishad can play in versions other than T20. Confidence in this interpretation is medium, as the report only clearly mentions the T20 version and gives no details of other formats. However, it is certain that the auction was formally held at a five-star hotel, indicating a commercially planned league launch. The main challenge for the BCB is that the schedule of its own new domestic league's T20 version directly collides with the BBL. December to January is the busiest period of the global T20 calendar, and the Big Bash League is held during that time. Both Mustafizur and Rishad want to play the full BBL season, so they will be completely absent from the D Three Trophy's T20 version. Since the BCB has agreed to give clearance, it can be said the board has adopted a strategy of maintaining good relations with star players. This is positive on one hand because players will remain loyal to the BCB for future national duty. But on the other hand, it destroys the star attraction of the new domestic league's first season. There may be another reason behind the stars' prices falling below one crore points in the auction, which is undisclosed in the report. That is the use of a points currency in the D Three Trophy auction, likely a salary-cap system. Under this system, buying teams know in advance that star players will be fully or partially unavailable for the tournament. So they are taking a risk by buying players at low prices. From this perspective, the low prices of Mustafizur and Rishad are in no way a decline in their sporting ability. Rather, it is a reasonable market value determined by availability. But this has a far-reaching effect. If the BCB regularly allows stars to go to the BBL and cannot get them for the domestic T20 version, the first year's broadcast and sponsorship value may suffer. On the other hand, the BBL will attract South Asian audiences by getting two popular Bangladeshi bowlers, which helps expand the league's market. In this way, star value is being transferred from the domestic league to the foreign league. Due to the BCB's clearance policy, such calendar collisions may recur in the future. If the board does not introduce schedule-protection rules in the national interest, the D Three Trophy risks becoming star-depleted. Overall, this report is not just news of Mustafizur finding a team in the BBL, but an important document on the structural challenges facing Bangladesh's new franchise league and the trend of star players going abroad.
